Ray Johnston founded the church in 1995 after starting a living room Bible study the year before, sparked by a string of teenage suicides in the community. The first service at a rented Granite Bay country club drew more than 160 people. Three decades later, Bayside is one of the largest churches in America, with weekly attendance around 20,000 across campuses in Roseville, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Auburn, Davis, and beyond. Johnston is also known for the annual Thrive conference for church leaders.
