Mount Zion Baptist Church

Mount Zion Baptist Church is a historic Black Baptist congregation based in Whites Creek, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. Reverend Jordan Bransford founded the church in 1866, making it one of the oldest congregations on this index, and its longtime home on Jefferson Street was completed in 1905. Bishop Joseph W. Walker III took the pulpit in 1992 at age 24, fresh out of Vanderbilt Divinity School, with 175 members. The church now counts membership near 20,000 across three Nashville-area locations, including the 5,000-seat Whites Creek sanctuary that opened in 2001.
